What is mindfulness?

Definition of Mindfulness from UCLA MARC - Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior:

Paying attention to the present moment experience, with openness, curiosity, and a willingness to be with what is.

  • Improve relationships (Its not just a personal practice, it can improve how we relate to others)

The Science of Mindfulness

There are many studies out there exploring mindfulness. At the same time it is a very young field and there is still so much to go.

  • In the last decade we have seen an increase in studies – there are 6000-7000 studies.

  • Need to be replicated, Need larger subject sizes.

  • It has been shown to be helpful for chronic pain, insomnia, cardiovascular health, anxiety and depression.

  • Physical health (Psoriasis study)

    • Mindfulness is helpful for inflammation.

    • Some research is looking at genetic markers, increase in cortisol, increase in inflammatory response and decrease in the immune system
